IEEE

I am currently attending Washington State University and am certified in the Computer Science Program. I am the Chairman of the IEEE Student Chapter, a student-run organization affiliated with the IEEE, a professional organization.

The IEEE is the organization that sets development standards for things relating to the fields of computer science, electrical engineering and computer engineering. As an example, the "firewire" connection on your computer operates and is constructed according to IEEE standard 1394.

Our Student Chapter's goals this year are closely linked to the changes being seen in the fields of computer science, electrical engineering and computer engineering, both in-industry and at universities nationwide.

Universities have had issues with student retention in our fields. To combat this, our student chapter is attempting to increase the sense of community for our members. We hope that an increased sense of belonging will aid in creating support networks. The hope is that we can offer support to fellow students who may feel they are having an unduly hard time. College, of course, is also the time to make those industry contacts that may follow us for our entire lives!

We are also trying to add benefits for our members. With students on such a tight budget, it's important to have a good answer to the question, "Why am I spending $30 for membership in your club?" Our Student Chapter sponsors a rafting trip in September and a ski trip during the last few months of the year. We typically have an "open to close" event in a local bar during the Spring semester. On top of hosting monthly meetings, we are trying to put together more frequent, lower-commitment events so members can congregate and have a good time.
